Online Couples Therapy that Works

If Communication Techniques Aren’t Working, Let me Help

A lot of my couples have already tried the communication tips. They read the books, they downloaded the app, they remember to use "I statements" for about three days before the next argument pulls them right back to where they started. And then they feel worse, because now they have tried and it still did not work.

Communication techniques address the surface of what is happening between two people. What I work with is what is underneath it. In Emotionally Focused Therapy, the goal is not to teach couples a better way to argue. It is to understand what is driving the argument in the first place, which almost always comes back to attachment, specifically what each person needs to feel safe, valued, and not alone in the relationship.

When those underlying needs get addressed, communication tends to shift on its own. Not because a script was followed but because both partners are finally responding to what the other person is actually asking for, which is often very different from what the argument looked like on the surface.

If you have tried the techniques and found yourself back in the same place, that is not a sign your relationship cannot change. It is a sign the work needs to go a layer deeper. That is exactly what I do at Attached Counseling.

How I work…

I am not here to sell you a dream or make promises. Just facts and a little bit of hope.

Most couples I work with are not falling apart. They are stuck in a cycle that has a hundred different surface arguments but almost always comes down to the same thing underneath — two people who stopped feeling safe enough to actually hear each other. That pattern has a name in EFT. We are going to find yours, slow it down, and start moving through it differently.

The approach I use is Emotionally Focused Therapy, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson with decades of attachment research. The numbers are worth knowing: 70 to 73% of couples recover from relational distress through EFT, and 90% report significant improvement in their relationship (Johnson et al., 1999). What I find equally important is that couples continued to improve significantly after therapy ended — this is not a temporary fix.

Our work together is not about getting back the spark you had at the beginning. It is about building something new and more sustainable than that — the kind of trust and closeness that actually holds when life gets hard.

If that is what you are looking for, I would love to connect.

What is Emotion Focused Couples Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) is a highly effective, research-backed approach designed to improve emotional connection and resolve conflict in relationships. Unlike other methods of marriage counseling or couples counseling, EFT focuses on the emotions and attachment patterns that shape interactions between partners. This approach helps couples identify and break free from repetitive, negative cycles that often stem from unmet emotional needs, fostering a secure and fulfilling bond.

EFT views disagreements and emotional distance as stemming from insecure attachments. These patterns of disconnection—whether they involve criticism, withdrawal, or avoidance—are rooted in deeper fears and needs. EFT helps partners identify and transform these negative patterns into positive, bond-enhancing interactions. By creating a secure emotional attachment, couples learn to navigate conflict with compassion, strengthen intimacy, and build a relationship rooted in trust and understanding.

Sessions Will Look Like…

EFT helps couples map their relational patterns, address emotional pain, and practice new ways of connecting. The process involves three stages:

  1. De-escalation
Couples identify the cycles of behavior and emotional triggers that fuel conflict. By mapping these dynamics, partners begin to understand how underlying emotions and unmet needs contribute to recurring arguments and emotional distance.

  2. Restructuring Emotional Interactions
Through guided conversations, couples learn to express their emotions and needs with honesty and vulnerability. Partners replace defensive behaviors with compassion, creating new patterns of connection that foster trust and closeness.

  3. Consolidation and Application
In this phase, couples integrate their new skills and emotional understanding into daily life. These changes strengthen their bond and equip them to navigate future challenges with empathy and collaboration.

Relationships are Emotionally Focused

EFT is distinct from other approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Solution-Focused Therapy because it emphasizes the emotional connection between partners as the foundation of a healthy relationship. With a success rate of over 90%, EFT is considered one of the most effective forms of couples therapy for addressing:

  • Communication breakdowns

  • Recurring arguments or unresolved conflict

  • Emotional disconnection or intimacy issues

  • Rebuilding trust after infidelity or betrayal

  • Navigating life transitions and shared goals

By focusing on emotions as the driving force behind behaviors, EFT helps couples build a secure bond, fostering deeper connection and long-term relational satisfaction.

EFT doesn’t aim to suppress or eliminate emotions—it embraces them as powerful tools for connection. Couples learn to recognize and regulate their emotions, transforming them into a source of insight and empathy. This shift promotes emotional intelligence, empowering partners to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively during conflict.

When emotions are understood and expressed constructively, they pave the way for secure attachment and lasting intimacy. Partners move from patterns like attack-withdrawal or mutual avoidance to interactions rooted in trust, respect, and mutual care.
